Debts written off?

I’m looking for inspiration and positive stories. Have you ever had any luck having debts written off or do you know of any cases that have?? Please tell me about it!

Wescot, who are managing my biggest debt (NatWest personal loan of 14K) has asked me for a lot of paperwork to support my write off request and I have been able to provide all of it (mainly regarding mental health) and while I wait for the outcome I just need cheering up a bit. Thanks

I haven’t had any debts written off but NatWest who I had two debts with actually wrote me a letter saying they had made the decision to not comercially chase me for my debts. They stayed on my credit file for six years after the default date but I didn’t pay them off. They said I could pay them if I wanted to, but they wouldn’t chase me for them.
  • I see! Did you ask them for a write off? Were you paying token payments at all or not?

My brother had various credit products, cards/loans etc.

He suffered a stroke a couple of years ago which resulted in him being moved to full time care, obviously couldn't work, or understand he had bills to pay etc.

Myself, acting under a POA, wrote to all his creditors, explaining the situation, and provided medical reports etc, managed to get 3 credit cards, two loans, and various other small debts written off completely.

They had no hope of ever getting any further payment, so commercially, it was the right thing to do.

I know your wanting to hear of successful cases of write offs to boost your confidence here, but after what you have told us in previous posts, I think you have a very good chance of this happening, if you don`t get write off`s, you should get a conformation that these debts won`t be chased.

Contrary to popular belief, most creditors will write off a debt if there is no realistic hope of repayment, due to whatever issues you may be having, it may not happen straight away, but it will happen if you persevere.

  • I will accept whatever cession my creditors take as the only thing I can do is provide them with the evidence I have and hope for the best.

I didn’t ask them for a write off and I wasn’t paying anything at the time. I had written to a different company as I thought they were holding my debt as NatWest had passed the debt onto them. However, the debt had then been passed back to NatWest. What I wrote was I was in the process of sorting out my debts and wanted to get an up to date balance and details before I worked out a repayment schedule. They then replied with the latter about not commercially chasing the debts.
