My new standard tariff with British Gas is showing 51.626p per day standing charge (payment by monthly  DD).  Ofgem cap , according to their website is 45p.  Anyone know why this is so different.  Regional variations maybe ? ( I'm based in the SW)  or are British Gas  overcharging?  I've checked with Br Gas  they say it's  set by Ofgem so nothing they can do..

SW should be around 49p so maybe around 51.45p with VAT.

I'd say that figure is fairly accurate.

    EDF also shows  51.62p.

The standing charge is different for each region.

Ofgem say that the average across GB is 45p, but yes, different regions will have different caps, and also different caps by payment method and tariff type, hence the use of the word 'average'.
If you are in the Southern Western region then your 51.626p is exactly correct for a single rate electricity tariff paid by DD.

Thanks all  .. I wish the three Br Gas advisors I chatted to could have shown me that.

Are you on a fixed or a variable tariff? British Gas have been increasing the standing charge on my fixed tariff contract and I have had quite a job putting it right.
