Dinnerware?

  • The dishwasher you buy will indicate how many place settings it can accommodate. There is only 2 of us and we have a dishwasher, we tend to run it every night but we are at home a lot so are using more crockery.

We have 8 of each (purchased 2 of the 4 place sets) and we found that Tesco did some nice quality sets for a bit more than ’budget’ prices. Ours are handmade and are lovely.
Do keep in mind that if you’re getting lodgers, they may not be as careful with your dinnerware as you are. So I would factor this in when you decide on your budget.

Sorry, place? Is that a typo? (By autocorrect)
No, it’s right. ‘Place settings’ will be how many dinner places (seats) it can fit in it. So a dinner plate, side plate, cup/glass and bowl for each person. Ours is a full sized dishwasher and can hold 12 of each.

I’m surprised how few plates we break, but I suggest getting extra, to allow for breakages.

There are two sizes of dishwasher. The 60cm ones hold about 20 plates, plus bowls etc. But saucepans etc take up a lot of space, so you don’t need 20 plates to fill it.

You can also get smaller dishwashers, 45cms?, that hold less stuff obviously.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I went for the Ikea FLITIGHET range - Not hugely expensive. I only keep four sets in the kitchen draw, the remainder is stashed away in a dark corner. It encourages the lodger(s) and myself to keep on top of the washing up.

A word of caution having two lodgers - If they are not a couple, you may well find yourself liable for Capital Gains Tax when you come to sell the place. You may also be classed as an HMO which burdens you with additional obligations depending on where you are in the UK.

    Thanks

Why would it be different if they're a couple?

A couple counts as a single family unit and you would generally give them a single licence to occupy.

Don't rush - a few weeks will tell you which crockery and cutlery you use most frequently in a way you probably haven't really noticed if you wash up after every meal.

Fair. I'm still using the Asda smart price ones that I got a decade ago at uni but for my own house I'd want something plentiful an nicer than Asda smart price ones.
