Getting a spare numberplate when we don't yet have the V5...
We bought a caravan last week but didn't have a vehicle capable of towing it so bought a secondhand car today from a main dealership - already has a towbar so thought that'll all be easy for picking up the caravan next week.
Picked up the vehicle today and then got home and thought we'd order the numberplate to go on the caravan, stupidly not having realised that we would need a V5 for that.
We weren't given anything from the V5 - realised now that we perhaps should have had that tear off section for new keeper and would that have allowed us to get the numberplate?
Of course, I'll ring the car dealer first thing and see if they can send it / scan it or something but will probably worry all night about this - any helpful ideas please?

Order online from one of those places that do “Show Plates” but make sure the plate is legal. You won’t have to produce documents.1

Thank you. Didn't realise we could do that. Hubby also had the bright idea of asking the garage if they'd ask the previous owner if he still has the plate. We know he also had a caravan. Or maybe the garage would get one made for us - they must get them made as all their cars have their logo on!0

When I bought a car for towing, the dealer made a spare plate up for me.
If the previous car owner towed, there might be a spare number plate under the boot carpet.
If really stuck, just remove the rear number plate from the car and put it on the caravan. That's enough to make you legal.1 -
Or as suggested order a legal plate from one of the online providers who from experience don't ask to see the V51

All of the online sellers are supposed to ask for details, but you can try and hope they don't.
The dealer who supplied the car should be able to get you a plate though, if you can't wait for the V51 -
Plenty on eBay who will do a ‘show plate’.
I’ve just ordered one which arrived with a note requesting the V5 number, otherwise it could only be used for show purposes.1 -
I've regularly bought these from amazon for trailers and bike racks with no problem at all.
In fact just had to get a new one a couple of weeks ago.Actually slightly scary how easy it is to get one!1 -
You could also take the back plate off the car and stick it on the van until you obtain a spare.1

Thank you. Dealer was helpful and some paperwork is coming in the next day or two.0
