Smart meters
I spoke to my energy provided (EDF) about what my smart meter tells me I'm using and what I'm being charged and they tell me that the meters are not that accurate and ask me to provide meter readings, readings that they can already se as the meters are Smart? am i being mislead

There is no harm doing a physical reading and if on economy 7 there will be two readings to take. If you have gas check if it is showing as lb or m3 as the unit as each needs a different calculation.to conveet to kWH.
You can then compare your manual meter readings to your smart meter and see if it is accurate.
If it's accurate then trust your smart meter and no harm to input your readings every month unless on a variable quarterly direct debit as they may bill you early.0 -
That sounds more like they are unable to receive the data from your meter. There is no difference in the meter read if they read it from a smart meter or if you do a manual read from the same meter. I would agree with you that they are telling you nonsense.Morgant said:I spoke to my energy provided (EDF) about what my smart meter tells me I'm using and what I'm being charged and they tell me that the meters are not that accurate and ask me to provide meter readings, readings that they can already se as the meters are Smart? am i being mislead
Their claim that the meter are not showing your use accurately is scary, I doubt very much they will give you that in writing.0 -
I think you are talking about the In House Display toy which sits in your kitchen - the Smart meter is in your garage or outdoor meter box and it is the communications hub as part of this that sends the meter readings back to EDF.Morgant said:I spoke to my energy provided (EDF) about what my smart meter tells me I'm using and what I'm being charged and they tell me that the meters are not that accurate and ask me to provide meter readings, readings that they can already se as the meters are Smart? am i being mislead
The IHD can have inaccurate £ info if EDF has not sent it updated tariff info - there have been several threads on this subject.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
The cost information shown on the IHD will only be accurate if the supplier has sent the correct tariff information to your gas and electricity meters. Even then your gas costs will be slightly different from your actual bill. The communications hub contains a a gas proxy meter which uses a fixed calorific value. The actual calorific value of the gas that you use varies by the day.Morgant said:I spoke to my energy provided (EDF) about what my smart meter tells me I'm using and what I'm being charged and they tell me that the meters are not that accurate and ask me to provide meter readings, readings that they can already se as the meters are Smart? am i being mislead
To extract data from your meter, suppliers use a secure piece of software known as an Adapter. I was with EDF for a couple of months post the failure of Zog Energy. My working SMETS2 meters mysteriously went ‘dumb’ on transfer and then came back to life on the day that my present supplier took over. My guess is that EDF may have an Adapter issue.

More seriously, if you have an imperial meter (ft3) and you don't see 2.83 in the calculation then you're being undercharged. Similarly, if you have a metric meter and you do see 2.83 in the calculation then you're being overcharged.0 -
I have a similar problem. I am on Economy 7 and the smart meter does not tell me how much I spend on each tariff. Also the new meter does not have the readings on it so I cannot check if they are charging the correct amount. Any ideas?0

Your smart meter almost certainly will tell you how many kWh you have used on each tariff. However the in-home display (IHD) will not. You'll have to check the meter itself to get those details.

Take regular meter readings and keep a spreadsheet. As mentioned, the IHD will only tell you combined tariff cost and usage.billyjs55 said:I have a similar problem. It can get a bit confusing as I have found out recently. Unknown to me, up until recently, my supplier has been using 2 meter registers; however, I can see that following a tariff change? that the R1 register is now being used for offpeak and the R2 for peak. Billing is fortunately based on 30 minute usage.QrizB said:Welcome to the forum.billyjs55 said:I am on Economy 7 and the smart meter does not tell me how much I spend on each tariff. You'll have to check the meter itself to get those details. When a meter reading is provided on a statement, it is invariably the single total meter reading as per the IHD. I can see the potential for confusion and many switching disputes. There really needs to be an industry-standard that requires suppliers to inform consumers of the registers in use which should also be shown on all statements.0
