Complained about faulty phone within 30 days but did not return until after 30 days - rights?

I bought a refurbished second hand phone from Giffgaff that stopped working (did not make or recieve calls or texts and stopped connecting to the network). I contacted them within 30 days of purchasing the phone to report the fault. I did not ask for a refund at that point. They gave me a list of trouble shooting actions to carry out, including ordering and trying a new sim card in it. By the time I had done all of this it was outside the 30 day period and they said the problem was likely with the phone. They said I could return it for a repair but because it was outside the 30 days I could not get a refund or replacement. Is this right? I thought because I had contacted them within 30 days that they should still offer me a refund.

They're wrong. You need to tell them that, under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (CRA), you have a 30 day short-term right to reject for a full refund and this get's paused as soon as you notify the seller of the fault. So if you spoke to them within 30 days then they can't run the clock down until after the 30 day period to get you to accept a repair.1
