SKY subscription needed to use SKY+ ?

Hiya, I am on the look out for a new PVR and have come up with the idea of buying the SKY 'freeview' package for the one off charge of £75, and then buying a second hand SKY+ box, but am now unsure if the box will work if I don't have an ongoing subsciption with SKY. Will it still work with the 'free' channels or is my only option to buy a freeview PVR ? (I'm not interested in spending £20 + a month on my tv viewing) Can someone clear this up for me - thanks.

I don't think it works, my sister had SKY+ on subscription then cancelled it down to freeview on SKY and her SKY+ box no longer works, you will probably be better off buying a freeview pvr

Sky+ definitely will not record unless you have a Sky subscription. If you want Sky+ I (or any other Sky customer) can do a recomendation and you get a Sky+ box installed for free. Minimum subscription is £16 per month for 12 months"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Sky+ wont work because the dish requires a double LNB installed to be able to record 2 programmes at once and pause & rewind live TV.0

Just to confirm what other posters have said ... Sky+ won't work unless you have a subscription to Sky (though there is no longer an 'extra' charge for Sky+).
You can just about get away with it without a double LNB (I don't have one) ... it reduces the Sky+ box to something for pausing live TV and manual recordings.
If you don't mind a larger upfront cost, you could get something like a dreambox or another satellite PVR. You probably need to search another forum for the details, but it's what I do (I have a media centre PC which records Sky for me).

Sky's FreeSAT is awful as well; sure you get some other things you don't on normal freeview like I think you get BBC from all the regions but when I last checked you don't get 'Dave' and other such channels.0

Top up TV do a pvr box with a card slot for £100 - comparable to the sky+ 1. You don't have to subscribe to topuptv to buy one but then again if you do you don't commit to a years contractStarting MB- looking for Raf offers.

sky+ costs £10 a month unless you have multiroom which costs £10 a month. you would probably have to take the basic package for 12 months but after that you would still get the free channels and you may be able to get the sky+ service for the £10 a month without subscribing to channels. i am not sure though.0

You dont need to have any mixes for sky+, it will cost you £10 a month though. I changed to a mix recently, it only costs an extra £6 for more channels as freesat is so boring.
I even confused cs sometimes, they couldnt believe Sky+ is available for non-subscribers. Btw, when i got Sky+ installed, i was an existing customer but cancelled my subs, this was last year before they dropped the monthly fee.0
