This morning I was stationary and waiting for another car to move when a commerical construction workers van went into the back of me. He admitted it was his fault but when I make a claim will I still have to pay my voluntary excess. I could live with the damage as a quick inspection has revealed what apprears to superifical damage as he pushed to plastic part in and it hasn't returned to the original position. There are also scratches and some deeper groves. When I calmer I will have a better look especially as it was near one of my reversing sensors.
Like an idiot I didn't look at his vehicle as it was moved out of the way when I moved my car forward. He admitted it was his fault but I now realise that he could retract this comment. To be safe should I still tell my car insurer even if I don't make a claim as I am not sure I could afford the excess. I didn't take out any extra cover for this.
Can anyone advise as I am sitting here very stressed with racing heart and have no one to ask.

You need to tell your insurance regardless
You would claim from his insurance and so do not pay an excess
You should definitely get the car checked as there could be more than superficial damage underneath
Did you take photos, get his insurance details etc?1 -
Some insurers will waive the excess if its a clear cut non-fault accident and you have all the third party's details... they have no obligation to do so but its relatively common practice.
Alternatively you could claim from his insurance or go down the accident management route, but the later does have the risk of future stress.0
