Deed Poll name change before marriage

Hi all,

Looking for some guidance please!

This is my situation:
My name is currently Katie H and I am engaged, but have wanted to change my name for some time to Katie A (family maiden name/ want rid of my current name before marriage)I understand this needs to be done by deed poll.

My passport is due to expire in Aug 23, therefore I thought best to change to A now and update my passport.

The wedding is booked for March 24 and I want to become Katie A-M. So I understand, as becoming double barrelled I will not need to do a deed poll again.

My questions are:
-Do I need a solicitor to certify the deed poll for my passport?
-Do I just contact a solicitor to do this/do the witnesses need to come with me?
-How long can I travel on my passport in my unmarried name before I have to update it (provided I match the passport names to booking names and insurance, can I just update when it expires again?)

Any other thoughts are welcome.
Thanks in advance!

  • Also, please can someone tell me if I can get away with an unenrolled Deed Poll for passports/banks?
    Thanks

One thought would be to change to Katie A-M on marriage, avoid 2 changes
  • I have considered this, but I still need to update my passport next year and I'd rather not be married under my current name. I believe I would still only require one deed poll though, as becoming double-barrelled doesn't require one?!

sorry just realised you meant marriage was in Mar 2024, not 24th March next year - so would be after the passport is due not before  :#

gosh I don't know, I thought you could change your name to whatever you wanted by statutory declaration for not much money https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/118854/19049-statutory-declaration.pdf
Presume you need something official if taking spouse's surname and retaining your own (I mean other than the marriage cert which would assume you are Mrs M) - at least it makes things easier.

Sorry I am the wrong one to try to comment - never changed name in 35 years marriage, will answer to Mrs D but never use it for anything official.

Could you not just change your name now to the double barrel one?

Yes. A family member changed their name last year using the wording on the government page and changed their passport, driving license and all financial stuff using it.
As suggested above, change to the A-M now and save having to it it all twice.

You can use this for changing your name on your passport.  https://www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-poll/make-an-adult-deed-poll
All you need is your change of name deed and evidence that you use that name. (driving licence, bank statement etc)
If you want to change the name on your passport after you are married, enter your double barrelled name on the form and submit your marriage certificate showing both yours and your husbands name.
