Hi,
seriously considering a Cat.N car I have found and I am trying to get insurance quotes to see what impact it makes. All insurers have selections for modifications, but I have only found 2 with options for marking the car as 'written off'

Many big insurers say in their FAQ they cover Cat.N but have no setting in the quote engine for choosing it. same applies to the comparison websites.

I am wondering if a Cat.N is going to be more trouble than it appears if I can't search deals from major insurers or use comparison sites and are left with little choice or lots of time spent on the phone to each insurer asking what the quotes will be.

Anyone been down this road and what was your experience?

If the insurer doesn't ask whether it's been written off, you don't have to tell them. The large majority of insurers won't care.

In most cases the only material difference that it makes is that if the car is written off again, the payout may be slightly reduced to reflect the reduction in value associated with the write off marker.

I have insured a number of written off Cat D, Cat C, Cat N and Cat S and I have never ever mentioned it.

As above payout will be reduced if written off again (if they check).

Thank you both, I did wonder if that is the case, running test quotes, one on a learner policy where it asked the status, it made a few pounds difference. But running test quotes for a full licence driver with the 'written off' switch on and off produced quotes the same price.

Apparently the car had a dinged rear door and is old enough a new one was too expensive fix, the owner got a new one put on but is selling as the car was replaced. I will ask the owner for photographic evidence of the extent of the previous damage.
