Could it be those 30 pictures are on the cameras internal memory ( it has about 100mb of internal) rather than the SD card itself ?  ( just about enough room for 30 odd pictures ?)
Although normally internal memory is only active if no SD card
Any way to switch between the 2 i.e. Internal memory and SD card ?

Otherwise reading  the SD card directly is an option - some laptops have an SD card slot ( My HP one does)
Else a simple USB card reader would do the trick

Nikon say discontinued product on web site.
    Also they say this.

Micro-USB connector (Do not use any USB cable other than the included UC-E21 USB Cable.), Hi-Speed USB Supports Direct Print (PictBridge)

SD, SDHC, SDXC, Internal memory (approx. 99 MB)

so the camera has two locations for holding pictures, could you take out storage media to see what is on it.
  • If the laptop is opening one folder by default and doing so automatically, just go up a few levels to the root directory of the phone and look around for other folders where the pictures could be stored.

The size of the folder is likely to be a good clue.
