    I'd be very surprised if this was the case. Most likely some of the funds came via the mortgage/released equity. 
    Solicitors trusting you to pay after completion would be unusual, but I don't see anything notable about paying between exchange and completion. "Pay this or you can't complete" is a fairly good incentive to get the cash in!

    If you are selling, they will just deduct their fees from the purchase price.

    If you are buying or in a chain, you will probably need to pay their fees the same time as you pay them the deposit.
