SMETS2 or upgraded SMETS1

I have a SMETS1 smart meter that has been upgraded by my current supplier (who aren't the original supplier) so that they can read it. I am just wondering if there would be any advantages in a SMETS2 meter (for instance, if I decided or was forced to change supplier). I realise that usually a SMETS2 meter is not supplied if there is already a SMETS1 meter installed, especially an upgraded one. But there are special reasons why it might be possible to persuade my supplier to make the change in my case, if I reckoned it was worth doing.

AFAIK there's no discernible difference. It sounds like your meter is now registered with the DCC so should continue to work if you change to another supplier in the future.
  • As far as the consumer is concerned, a smart meter is a smart meter. The difference between an adopted SMETS1 compared to SMETS2 is the way that it connects to the DCC Network. Adopted SMETS1 meters have, for security reasons, a dedicated portal. The main reason that smart meters go 'dumb' on the change of a supplier is more often than not down to the supplier's Adapter software: that is, the secure software that it uses to send messages to your meter and retrieve data.
