Well our chief invigilator was happy for me to read a book when in a one-to-one setting. No exams were invalidated in the process. As long as you keep half an eye on the student there is no problem. I always sat out of their eyeline so as not to distract them, so they couldn't tell if I was watching them at any given moment.

Blimey - your place better not get inspected, thats really lax from your chief examination officer. Thats risking getting an entire years worth of exams thrown out......it is rarely "no problem" to bring outside material into examination conditions and plus it shows a real disrespect to the student you are invigilating....you are being paid to watch them, not read a book or play on a phone.

No, you are being paid to make sure they don't cheat and that the exam takes place under fair conditions. You don't have to stare at them for 3 hours to achieve this!
  • Ages ago when I was doing my A Levels I had a clash so had to do one of the exams on my own.

There was only one invigilator with me and she read a book for the whole hour and didn’t look up at me once.

Although it would be fairly impossible to cheat when sat in an open room on your own…

I was also very surprised to read this! When I was invigilating, it was no phones, no books, no newspapers or magazines. The exam boards didn't want anyone taking outside material into the exam hall in case it influenced the exam results. It's not about staring at the students, just making sure the students don't have something else to stare at!

Well any student that can read my paperback upside down and behind them deserves to get extra credit! And anyone that can extract useful information in those circumstances for Geography or Mandarin from a book about space faring dragons doubly so!

A friend has done this for a few years. She says it’s easy money just for sitting around. They often give her students who are taking exams in a private room. So it’s 1-1 watching a student write their paper while she plays on her phone or reads a book.

There are busy times and times when there is no work. Also she gets paid sessionally, so for a whole morning even if the exam isn’t that long.
You aren't allowed to play on your phone or read a book if you are invigilating an exam.
