Did my first session today. It went ok, I was invigilating a single student in separate accommodation. Apart from a small problem with some noise from people banging doors in the corridor (I had to shush them) it was smooth. And means I've been paid £30 for reading a book for a few hours! Obviosuly if you are in the main hall you have to be more attentive, but doing one person was easy enough.
Out of curiosity  when you invigilate a singe student I assume there are two adults present?
    Make £2023 in 2023 (#36) £3479.30/£2023

    Make £2024 in 2024...

No, just the one.  Invigilators are DBS / PVG checked.

Class rooms aren't generally use (at least where I do it). Large exam groups are in the gym, single students in a small internal seminar room.  I've also done a session in a corner of the school library.  This year there have been fewer subjects taught and so examined so accommodation hasn't been so tight apart from the day when the local election count was on.

When I worked as an adult ed tutor, I was DBS checked.  But was still not supposed to be alone in a room with a student if we couldn't be seen from outside.

I volunteer with children and we aren't allowed to be left alone with children, a clear line of sight is acceptable but not for prolonged periods of time.

There have been on all occasions so far because the students I've been invigilating have also had a reader (who has also scribed for some exams). I don't think there are two adults present when a student in separate accommodation doesn't need a reader, I will have to ask. The chief invigilator does do a regular circuit of all the rooms where exams are being done to check all is well - all the rooms have glass panels in the doors.

My neighbour has just picked up some work during this exam period at the school he's applied to be a caretaker for. So I think he's going in more to get a feel for the potential new full time job. He had a meeting a few weeks ago and started pretty much straight away.

Well our chief invigilator was happy for me to read a book when in a one-to-one setting. No exams were invalidated in the process. As long as you keep half an eye on the student there is no problem. I always sat out of their eyeline so as not to distract them, so they couldn't tell if I was watching them at any given moment.
