New provider

Hi to all, last October 2021I was with avro energy for both my gas and electric and as we know  they went bust so I switched straight away to British Gas on a two year fixed deal on direct debit.I’ve had an email today from octopus energy saying that their in the final stages of switching me to them from avro.so my question is was British Gas just my interim supplier whilst avro sorted out a supplier for me as I was their customer or can I stay on British Gas and tell octopus there not needed. Thanks greatly for any advice or replies.

It's likely that the message from Octopus is due to them having to create an account for you so they can settle your outstanding Avro bill and refund any credit that's due. I don't think you'll actually get switched to Octopus.
Octopus are quite approachable; email them at hello@octopus.energy with your details and they'll be able to tell you what's going on.

I've noticed that if I use a comparison site such as uswitch, they actually tell me who my provider is, they just don't know what tariff I'm on. I thought it was kinda scary at first.

I'm surprised that it's allowed; it seems to break GDPR.
Must be a scammer's delight, they can easily find out your gas and electricity suppliers so that they'll seem legitimate when they call you and offer you a refund or an exclusive tariff if you sign up straightaway.
Just give us your bank details, oh and for security we need your Mother's Maiden Name and your Date of Birth...

I imagine that it's covered by "legitimate interest".

I don't think scammers have any "legitimate interest" in knowing who my energy providers are...

It won't break GDPR any more than the two links you posted at the bottom of this quote pyramid do!
