Supplier requesting a payment from December

Options
Hi, I had some blinds fitted in December, and paid a deposit by debit card (or so I thought). The payment didn't go through (unsure why), I didn't notice (Christmas absorbed the extra money we had) and neither did the supplier. Now they've come back to me - 4.5 months later - to say payment wasn't made and I owe them £500. Technically I do but as I thought I'd paid it's come as a shock! Do I have any rights to push back on this? TIA for any advice.

No, not really.   They've supplied (and fitted) the blinds, you owe the money.

If the payment error has left you in a position that you will struggle to pay, then you could discuss with the company about paying in installments.

No, of course you don't. Thank them for the helpful period of interest-free credit.

Did you not see that the payment had not been made when you checked your bank account?

As above, yes, you have to pay it.  If paying it right now would place you in a difficult position, then certainly you have some scope to delay or stagger payment.

The issue with the latter, of course, is that it is hard to argue both "I didn't notice £500 wasn't taken" and "£500 is a significant amount of money to me and I can't raise it at short notice".  You'd expect one or the other to apply.

It's already been pushed back by several months.  Pay what you owe and pay it now.

Agree with (most of) the above posts - you owe the money. And as it is less than 6 months since original payment attempt then (I believe) they could simply make a new request against your card without your prior approval. (After 6 months they'd need your approval).

Therefore they're being more than fair by alerting you first - they didn't have to do so. Thus it is in your interest to cooperate with them - as said above, if a single £500 payment would put you in hardship then come to an agreement with them.

Push back on what? You owe the money. It's your responsibility to make sure you pay your bills.
