How does the smets 2 meter actually work?

Options
I've had a smart meter for about a month and have gone on to a new eye watering tariff today. I thought I sussed if over the last few weeks but actually with the new standing charge and tariff rates the new daily amounts don't add up. My tariff was quoted including vat these vat inclusive rates are now held in the smets 2 but the maths don't seem right. Can anyone explain please how these should actually work. I'm with Eon. Thanks

If the rates on the meter and hence the IHD are correct, then is it possible that you have forgotten to add the daily standing charge when checking the amounts shown?
If that isn't it, then please give us an example of the wrong calculation?

The electricity cost is 29.23 per unit, daily charge 51.61 p gas is 7.34 daily charge 40.91p All rates quoted to me by eon vat inclusive.
electricity usage so far today 1.56 kw cost on smets £0.63
gas usage so far today 10.85kw cost on smets £0.92
I understand the standing charge is missing so need to add 92.52 a day on top but the unit calculation seems off as well.
I opted for a fix for 2 years so accepted the inflated standing charge.
  • The IHD will only show accurate costs if your supplier has updated the correct tariff information in the ESME and GSME (ie; your meters). You can check the tariff information via the IHD or by looking at each meter (the latter often requires access to sub-menus).

Your supplier does not use meter tariff information to produce your bill.

As Dolor suggests, check the tariff details that are currently on your meter, easiest way is usually on the IHD where you can often find the information under an option called 'Account', typically on the 2nd or 3rd screen there...

You need to use the right terms otherwise you'll get in a muddle.  Energy usage is measured in kiloWatt hours (kWh), not kiloWatts (kW).
Gas 'units' are especially unhelpful because they can be ambiguous: the meter readings show the volume used, and this can be displayed in metric or imperial units depending on the age of the meter.  The gas kWh figure has to be established by a mathematical procedure which is shown on the bill.  The gas cost shown on the portable unit (IHD) won't be completely accurate because it depends on the Calorific Value which varies slightly.
  • Thanks for your comments.  Having only had this smart meter for a month I've realised it's not reflective of the whole situation. I'll use it as a guide and a conscience reminder to keep the consumption in check. Will continue to send monthly readings to the supplier as I've done for years that way will avoid nasty billing surprises in the future

you most likely won't be able to send meter readings manually if you have a smart meter
OVO, as an example, disables the manual.input with a message saying smart meters are doing it for me
  • I've managed to post my readings twice. Once after a month and yesterday before the tariff went up. Thankfully no error message yet and I got a bill both times.
