I have never done it but I have read more than once that white vinegar can be used as a fabric softener with towels and that it doesn't affect their drying ability, seemingly fabric softener over time make towels less efficient!
I rarely use fabric softener anyway so haven't tried.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

One of my local refill shops does white vinegar, 13p per 100ml.
So I got a bottle from Savers and will refill when empty.
It's not the only product I use, but it's really effective, especially when you live in a Very Hard water area.1 -
