Changing tariff

Just received this text from Scottish gas- should I sign up???

Fix your energy prices and avoid future price increases with our exclusive tariff Exclusive May 23v1. If you then find that one of our future tariffs is cheaper, you can switch again without paying an exit fee. britishgas.co.uk/switchtariff
Thanks, your Scottish Gas team.

Do your own sums, using your actual consumption for the last year,   - compare this offer with what you are paying now (probably the variable rate) and guess at what might happen in October -  25% ? 50% ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

    Welcome to the forum Jay

Generally fixes are too high at the moment but if you can provide the standing charge and price per kWh on this tariff that will help with advice.
  • maybe its just me but I'd question the legitimacy of the email and to not click any links.

You say its from Scottish Gas but the link is British Gas? 1st alarm bell.

what tariff are you on & what are the rates that you have been quoted? Is it roughly this (this is for South Scotland, it may vary slightly for yours if not same region)?
    Gas
    Standard unit rate10.003p per kWh
Standing charge 234.069p per day *
    Tariff ends on31 May 2023
    Price guaranteed until31 May 2023
Exit fees (if you change supplier before the end date) £75.00

    Electricity
    Standard unit rate32.666p per kWh
Standing charge 256.496p per day *
    Tariff ends on31 May 2023
    Price guaranteed until31 May 2023
Exit fees (if you change supplier before the end date)£75.00

That is quite a bit higher than the current SVT & you would be paying those higher rates immediately versus a hoped for saving next winter (but nobody knows what the SVT change in October will be).

edit: just noticed on another thread that sombebody else has had similar but apparently a rider that if they have a cheaper tariff in future you can switch to it without charge - do you have similar on your offer?

It's the same company, it's perfectly legitimate.

@StartledJesus has been given the same offer (link). It looks legit but, as @BUFF says, it's not a great deal even if:

  • My original post was in the 'What tariffs are you being offered...' thread, which is at the top of the board as an Announcement. Not a lot of activity on there at the moment...

My point was that I have lost all faith in offers from British Gas, after their recent 'mistake' and 'goal post moving' shenanigans on their SoLR Welcome tariffs. See various BG threads for background.
  • Am I right in thinking that some of the exit fees, albeit on fixed tariffs, can be in the region of £150?

    Yes, that is correct.
Hedging forward in the current market is expensive unfortunately.
