Pozitive Energy

Hi
I rent privately and recently discovered that my Landlord has signed us up to an energy provider who only deals with businesses.
The landlord has our meter running off of a main meter. We didn't have a say in the matter on which energy provider to go with.
We are about to move out but I just wanted to know if it is legal to do this as a landlord?

It is allowable for the landlord to be your energy supplier.
They are not usually permitted to make a profit on the resale of the energy and they are not permitted to pass on elements like the Climate Change Levy (CCL) to domestic customers, similarly they can only charge 5% VAT to domestic customers.

So I assume that your landlord pays for any usage from the main meter and you have to pay for any usage that appears on your own separate meter? If so this is completely legal, and I agree with the above from MWT.
It's certainly better to have your own completely separate supply and choice of energy provider, if possible.
  • Thank you for both comments. Yes I believe so. Just thought it was odd to paying business rates as a domestic customer.
