I'm in search of hearing aids and I wonder whether the second-hand devices are better than cheaper but new ones. It seems like a lottery.

You'd have to get them reprogrammed by an audiologist to suit you.  You'd have to do your research about model specs to see if any of the ones available would likely work for you.

I don't know what models are currently available on the NHS though, because those would be free.

It's going to depend - I'm not really aware of a market in second-hand hearing aids, but I'd say how happy you are with the result is likely to depend far more on who fits and 'tunes' them than the initial make and model.

Having said that, have you tried going down the NHS route? what's available now may not be all-singing all-dancing state of the art, but probably will include bluetooth capability if appropriate, for example.
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • You need to check if that really makes sense for you
  • I didn't even know that you can buy second hand hearing aids. Why not talking to NHS instead?

Ophthalmology are well behind as you can only have mono focal lenses, with cataract surgery on the NHS.

Unless you're referring to a specific set of circumstances, that's not correct

You are referring to lenses in glasses or contact lenses. Lenses for people with cataracts are replacements for the natural lenses which are removed. My sister has had a private consultation for surgery with variable lenses and we decided that they could actually be worse than mono focals. She only has one cataract which she can't even detect so can wait to see what happens with me, as I am soon (how soon?) to have bilateral surgery under GA.

Oh I see, yes I totally missed what you were meaning.  Thanks for the clarification :)
