Crossed meter

Hi all,

1st time poster - I hope you can help with this.

We moved into our house in December last year, it had been owned by a developer (who didn't live in the property) for two years and before that by a chap who lived here for ~30 years.

In order to establish who our supplier was I rang Scottish Power (who the previous owners had stated was our supplier) who initially said our address was listed as supplied by British Gas, but once I shared our meter reference confirmed that the meter was supplied by Scottish Power.

It appears that our meter is registered at another address, and our address has another meter registered to it (supplied by British Gas) - I think this is known as a 'crossed meter'.

I have spoken to Scottish Power 3 times and they have said they will correct the database but still nothing has happen (i.e I cannot submit meter readings or pay bills for my meter as my account is not active).  I continue to receive letters from British Gas asking me to set up an account.  I have called them outlining the situation but again nothing happened after the call.

I am concerned that either British Gas will chase me for usage that is not mine and/or that my Scottish Power bill for my actual usage will be enormous when I finally come to pay it.  Is there a 3rd party who I can contact who could update the meter 'database' with the correct information or is there anything else you can advise I do?

Many thanks

You of course took meter readings the day you moved in and photograph of any meters as proof.

Well just put the money away for the energy you are using at capped energy prices and keep monitoring usage each month and put that money away.

Then when this is finally all sorted out you won't have a hefty bill.

    Just threaten whoever it is

Or at least, you'll still have a hefty bill but you'll also have the money saved to pay for it!

I don't hold out a lot of hope for SP sorting this anytime soon. I found them completely useless with my complaint.

I have Economy 7 and the meters were being billed the wrong way round (how I regret getting it sorted, as we don't have storage heaters), I contacted them several times to get it sorted, but I think I only got it resolved when I moved to another supplier.

That supplier subsequently went bust, and I was transferred back to SP again, who re-transposed the meters. I had to go to the ombudsman via resolver to get it sorted again.

(I'm wondering now if I should switch to SP and hope they screw things up again so I get cheap daytime electric.....)

If they don't sort it soon, raise a complaint and escalate through the process.
