    If the hammer and screwdriver technique has not worked try a patio knife, rake out the gap then hammer in between grate and frame and tap along, once cleared as best get a set of pliers or sidecutters and put one handle through slot in grate and pull up with other handle lightly tapping frame with hammer.

    Smash it with a hammer and remove the pieces ,a new plastic one from the likes of Toolstation is £ 1.20 ,not worth the effort.

    The problem with that hammer approach is the risk of breaking the gully/pipe below.

    But I agree that the effort required to salvage the grate isn't really worth it... the grate plus hopper should be under £10.

    Had to take whole grate out in the end then get cover off- easier than trying to get the cover off in situ. Angle grind and re-use. Thanks for all your advice!
