If it is not for commercial use, ie a personal version of 365 then I look for a sale on Amazon and buy a code. Currently at £44.95 for a single version, while microsoft is charging £59.99.

It is possible to buy codes for older versions - but legality may be murky.

On line versions are free to use.

Unless you are wanting to use advanced features like Macro's in Excel then the free online version at www.office.com may well be enough.

If you work for a larger company then often you can get a cheaper Office365 subscription via the Home Use program.

There are also alternatives such as Open Office which can open, edit and save documents in Office formats which are free.

I use Libre Office, which is fine, except when I have to use the format function, which takes ages to open.  It wasn't always like that.

I hope it would be longer for Scottish/ OU/ foundation degree students and intercalated Masters students.
