I've been on a fix that is coming to an end in a few weeks. My current provider OVO has said my DD is likely to go up from £88 p/mth to £256 if I let it rollover (which I assume is the price capped tarrif?). While I knew a big rise was coming I didn't think it would be that much. My past 12 months usage is 20498 gas, 2514 electric. Does £256 p/mth sound about right based on that? Is there a calculator anywhere to work out what the cost should be?

I make that to be something like £2500/yr on the current capped SVT, £208/month.
Is your account currently in debit? If so, the extra £48/month could be to catch up with that.

Thanks. £2,500 p/yr is still more than I (naively!) expected. Blimey. I've been on this fix for a while so been in blissful ignorance of things I guess!

My account is currently in credit by a few quid. I'd guess they are trying it on a little bit with a overly high DD amount. They are always upping the DD amount even though the account is usually in credit and I have to get on to customer service to get it reduced.

There may be some of that for sure, but they may also be anticipating the next variable tariff increase due in October right before your peak gas use over winter...

As Qrizb says around £210 a month, the bit more they are asking for could be due to getting your account in credit for the winter also the cap is predicted to rise in October so they could be taking that into account.

Without knowing nothing about you house and family size and how much time is spent at home you're gas appears on the heavy side.
I used to use 18,000 kw/h of gas a year, watching my usage over last few years I brought that down to 9,000 units a year.
I've also got down my electric usage from 2400 units a year to 1200.

If you could cut back on your usage to say 2,000 a year for electric and 15,000 for gas, your monthly payment over a year would be £163 on the current price cap rates.
Cut it back more to 1,800/12,000 and it'll be £140 a month.
