    Also, it's almost May. Unless your toddler is particularly vulnerable, can you turn the CH off completely and leave it off until at least October?

    N. Hampshire must be a lot warmer than here in the north of England.  My smart thermostat maintains a weather report (presumably taking data from a nearby weather station).  In the last 30 days the maximum reported temperature was 16 C and the minimum was about 1 C.  It is 10 C outside at the moment and would be much the same inside if I turned the heating off.

    And if you have thermostatic control there should be no need or reason to turn the heating off.

    Sounds like it must be a very inefficient house. Unusual for the interior temp of a house to match outside?

    All heating off since 10th April and we are always 4-9oC above the temp outside. Mornings is very telling 1oC overnight but hall 19oC and Kitchen 17-18oC.

    Might be time to introduce the house to some insulation?

    Or is it a very energy efficient house?  Inside my house I have a fridge and freezer that average about 150 W; there is heat lost from the hot water cylinder and two occupants.  We cook and boil kettles.  To keep my house way above the outside temperature I would need a lot of internal apparatus wasting a lot of heat as a byproduct of what they are supposed to be doing.

    @Reed_Richards

    It's an interesting subject especially overnight for us when the outside temperature drops to 1oC yet no heating on and just the fridge freezer and 45 mins of the ASHP heating up hot water before we come down at 6am and the kitchen is cool but nearly 18oC. So definitely no sun to help either.

    Are you saying if the outside temperature drops to 1oC overnight your house drops internal temperature substantially?

    Our fridge freezer in the house and separate outbuilding freezer uses less than 1 kWh a day are you running something old or a big American type?

    @mssty has it really been as low as 1C in the last 2 weeks?

    Where are you based?

    @k_man

    For sure and lots of nights 3 or 4oC so hence the surprise of the house keeping a lot of warmth with no heating.

    You do get cold nights in Norwich!

    Although you still had your heating on until 10th 😉

    Leave the thermostat in the hall or room Without a trv. You need one rad on a normal valve to act as a bypass. All other rooms on trvs. Shut off the ones you dont need, save money.
     This is my job
    Please could you explain why anyone needs a radiator without a TRV? My bet is most reasonably modern homes don't have one and it's not obvious to me why it would be necessary?
    Because if all the rads shut down the pump will be put under stress and burn out.

    Some systems have differential bypasses, some dont. Combis have internal bypass, y plans there always an open port, s plans, defo need a bypass. One pipe systems are effectiveky bypassed. Having one rad with no restriction is just good practice.
     In answer to the op, isnt it just obvious that uf you heat less rooms it saves on the gas. A gas bill fir a one bed flat is likely to be less than a five bed house.
     Only in certain circumstances on old sytems ie heat leak rads is it dangerous to turn off valves.

    Some boilers have pump overuns some dont,. Have one rad with two manual valves is a catch all.
    Any well designed house will have the roomstat located in a room with no trv. Think about. You shut the trv off, room goes cold  room stat calls for heat. Why have two stats in conflict.

    @k_man yep we are a bit colder than Norwich city 1-2oC and more rural so yeah hit 1-2oC four times in the last 2 weeks.

    Never been below 17.8oC in the vaulted ceiling kitchen with lots of windows and doors that must be the least efficient room in the house. That's without heating. Hence my response to @Reed_Richards
