After being notified of a payment to my insurers this morning of a higher denomination than expected I perused the renewal notes to discover while the van (campervan) is SORN, no insurance is needed, my question is: am I owed a refund as insurance has been paid 2 months after being SORN. The payments are taken in instalments via DD

No, as you were still insured. It may not be needed, but it doesn't mean it's not a good idea.
If you no longer want the insurance, you need to cancel it, but check it's not more cost effective to keep it going.2 -

Did you tell them, at the time, your circumstances had changed?0

SORN is nothing to do with insurance - it's your job to keep on top of this, not the insurers.
They don't owe you anything, but you can of course cancel the policy if you wish.0 -

Given you must have SORN it, then if you did not require insurance then you have to tall them.Life in the slow lane0 -
If something happened to the van during this time would you have made a claim?0

But as OP has not been back since 22 April at 3:29PM. Will we ever know 🤷♂️Life in the slow lane0 -
This isn't relevant to the OP, but a number of replies here say that a SORNed vehicle is still covered by insurance. There's an ongoing thread on a Z4 forum I frequent, where some people have been told by their insurance companies that their cover isn't valid if their car is SORNed - https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=132258
If anyone's got a SORNed vehicle, then it'd be worth checking that it's still covered by any insurance which has been taken out for it.0
