Van SORN but not declared to insurance company

After being notified of a payment to my insurers this morning of a higher denomination than expected I perused the renewal notes to discover while the van (campervan) is SORN, no insurance is needed, my question is: am I owed a refund as insurance has been paid 2 months after being SORN. The payments are taken in instalments via DD

No, as you were still insured. It may not be needed, but it doesn't mean it's not a good idea.
If you no longer want the insurance, you need to cancel it, but check it's not more cost effective to keep it going.2 -
No. Just because it did not mean to be insured does not mean that it was not covered by insurance. If you do not want insurance then you need to cancel the policy and will potentially get a partial refund, less any fees. That of course means your camper van will be uninsured, so if someone damages it, steals it etc. then you will loose out.andymanib said:After being notified of a payment to my insurers this morning of a higher denomination than expected I perused the renewal notes to discover while the van (campervan) is SORN, no insurance is needed, my question is: am I owed a refund as insurance has been paid 2 months after being SORN. Did you tell them, at the time, your circumstances had changed?0

SORN means you can't drive the van on the roads, so you don't *need* insurance for that purpose. But it doesn't mean your van can't be stolen, damaged or catch fire etc, so the insurance is still valid. If you had informed your insurance company that your van was SORN, they might have reduced your payments, but they're unlikely to do so after the fact.andymanib said:After being notified of a payment to my insurers this morning of a higher denomination than expected I perused the renewal notes to discover while the van (campervan) is SORN, no insurance is needed, my question is: am I owed a refund as insurance has been paid 2 months after being SORN. SORN is nothing to do with insurance - it's your job to keep on top of this, not the insurers.
They don't owe you anything, but you can of course cancel the policy if you wish.0 -
Where is van kept?andymanib said:After being notified of a payment to my insurers this morning of a higher denomination than expected I perused the renewal notes to discover while the van (campervan) is SORN, no insurance is needed, my question is: am I owed a refund as insurance has been paid 2 months after being SORN. Given you must have SORN it, then if you did not require insurance then you have to tall them.Life in the slow lane0 -
If something happened to the van during this time would you have made a claim?0

The whole point of a SORN is offroad on private property or it's not a SORNborn_again said:

I know that, you know that but it appears that many people do not. So if the OP was keeping it on road etc. Then they may just have been lucky.bris said:

But as OP has not been back since 22 April at 3:29PM. Will we ever know 🤷♂️Life in the slow lane0 -
This isn't relevant to the OP, but a number of replies here say that a SORNed vehicle is still covered by insurance. There's an ongoing thread on a Z4 forum I frequent, where some people have been told by their insurance companies that their cover isn't valid if their car is SORNed - https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=132258
If anyone's got a SORNed vehicle, then it'd be worth checking that it's still covered by any insurance which has been taken out for it.0
