New Washer/Dryer ruined my clothes

I purchased a refurbished washer/dryer from Appliances Direct but on first usage it ruined the whole load of washing I put in it. It appears that the low heat setting on the tumble dryer is not low at all and by the look of the clothes it was a very high heat. I contacted the seller and they are picking up appliance tomorrow and said they will issue me a refund within 3-5 days. I mentioned the ruined clothes but the guy on the phone just said he was sorry. I am 60 and only on esa and cannot afford to replace this clothing. Does the company not have any liability as far as my ruined clothes, are concerned? I don't know, I suppose they don't, but I just wondered as I don't know what to do right now. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

What's the estimated value of the clothes? If they weren't brand new, remember to factor depreciation into it. That's the retailer's liability if the machine is faulty. Just ask them politely for that sum, bearing in mind they're then entitled to ask for the spoiled clothes.2
