Paying online but keeping my bank/card details safe

The part about PayPal is incorrect. If they are used as a payment processor for card transactions then S75 is still in force.Deleted_User said:Many firms use payment processors like Shopify, World Pay, Paypal etc. Is there any reason you want to not give your payment card details given that using paypal payments means no S75 cover etc? Firms with a secure payment gateway don't have access to your card details and don't store them unless you want to and even then, do not see your actual details
If you paid using your own PayPal account then no S75.0 -
OP stated very clearly (it's literally the first sentence they wrote) they use paypal to make the payments to prevent the supplier getting the credit card details hence the comment.penners324 said:

The fact they do this in the somewhat unusual view that it keeps their card safe (implying using any other method somehow risks firms getting the card details, which is clearly wrong) is the whole point of this topic.1 -

The range and volume of businesses losing their data is definitely increasing, and I prefer to put a disconnect between where my money resides and that probability.I am not concerned about the cover from the credit card, per se, as many of my payments would not be covered by such anyway. And I do realise that Paypal is not the ideal, which is another push for using a completely independent card.

Virtual card numbers don't help. It's effectively no different than inputting a physical card number.penners324 said:Use Chase as they have virtual card numbers if you're that worried.
Revolut offers disposable card numbers - which may be what the OP is looking for.
Faster Payments or Cheque may be other options as you're effectively sending a one off payment.0 -
Only problem being no protection if retailer folds, good do not arrive etc.Deleted_User said:

You can choose to run your finances as you need to but the range volume of businesses losing data is definitely NOT increasing, with businesses required to use secure transactions and not storing your data in text format, the criminals are increasingly having to use highly skilled techniques like compromising payment processing through digital skimming, which can affect PayPal as much as anything.sarahemmm said:Deleted_User said:

Thanks, Penners and Oberoth. My original question was how to make a payment in a safe way where the only option is to give a card number - so bank payment or cheque is not an option. I had vaguely heard of virtual card numbers, but my current cards do not offer them. So again, I am back to my original question - what prepaid card do MSEers recommend?

digital skimming, which can affect PayPal as much as anything.
Indeed. Which, given that I fully understand the loss of payment cover, means that I am - still - looking for a better option that is NOT my own bank or credit card.

Couple of point
Just ensure you are on the puka site.
Log off and shut the page down afterwards for extra security.
I'm a bit like you but use the debit card/online banking as last resort so cc is used most of the time
With banking now for Barclays at least when you pay someone if you name and the account does not match eg you mistype it will alert you. I was always worried sending the money to a wrong account so that helps but cc is the way forward even then check its a puka site and log off and out after use0 -

But these are not very MSE as most have a charge to use.
TBH. The odds on you having fraud on your bank/Credit card is very slim.Life in the slow lane2
