Debt chasers

Hi. Lowell’s debt collection agency have sent me a letter saying that I owe OVO the sum of £227. Until the letter I had never heard of OVO. I have been at my present address for 12 plus years and have never ever used this company. I have spoken to OVO who have no record of me ever having been with the company. After researching Lowell’s, I am reluctant to contact them in case I provide yet another route for them to contact me. Do you have any advice please. Many thanks … Pauline

If you have not had any dealings with OVO, it is very likely that Lowell are on a fishing trip because you have a similar name to someone else who does owe money.
I had this over a BT debt for someone in Manchester a few years back and Lowell will not see see sense or reason. Similarly, I've been at my address for years and after the way they treated my mother, BT are the very last telecoms firm I would willingly have any dealings with, so there was no chance whatsoever that Lowell would be getting a penny from me!
True to form, BT, right-up to executive level were utterly useless to the point of outright illegality in trying to sort this out and their responses persistently suggested that I must be trying to swizz them somehow and that they "had a copy of a signed contract on file" - yeah, right! Lowell just kept-on ignoring any protestations of mine, including the standard "prove-it" letter from the board linked above. They just want money. After being threatened one time too often, I stopped all contact with them - in retrospect, I shouldn't have bothered giving them the time of day at all.
What worked in the end was sending copies of the letters and logging all their phone calls (they will start at some point!) to Action Fraud and the abuse line of my non-BT phone company. This eventually produced, not an apology from the vermin but a curt letter saying they would no longer be pursuing any action against me. Grrr!
