The CV can be anything between 38 and 41.  See Gas meter readings and bill calculation - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
Does the consumer see any benefit to higher CV ie. boiler efficiency, heat etc.

The 'strength' of the gas varies all the time so a 'Calorific Value' adjustment has to be made to your cubic feet readings to make sure you are billed correctly for the kWh you have used.  Think of it like a Bureau de Change exchange rate.
Look at your last bill and you'll see that 39.2 was the Calorific Value that was used.

Is the date you are referring to the Jan one.
    Yes.
    (6427 - 6228) x 2.83 x Calorific Value (39.2) x Volume Correction (1.02264) ÷ 3.6 = 6271.1305 kWh

Thanks for this info.  It never occurred to me the figure could go so high.  In all my years (& there have been a lot of them) I do not remember a calorific value so high.  As I said it must have been really high at one point to get 39.8 average when one of the months was only 39.2.  I'm off to see if I can find a list of what they have been over the last year.

Yes - you will get more heat for the same volume of 'gas'.

Thanks Gerry. Out of curiosity what is Volume Correction and how is it calculated, plus what is the 3.6 used in your calculation.

    Taking these as an example

    21/01/2022

    6427

    6271 kWh

    27/10/2021

    6228

    1584 kWh

    Actual ? reading in ft3 6427 less 6228 is 199 ft3    x 33 approx   is 6600 KWh

Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

That's 329kWh too high !  Why not do it accurately?
