Having notified CHB online and a hand written form posted , both receiving confirmation they continue to pay my sons CHB. He has been in a paid apprenticeship for a year now and is over 20.

You need to ring them as a matter of urgency (0300 200 3100). As long as you have the means to pay the overpayments back it should be fine.0

Obviously you haven't spent it so when they ask for it back you will just be able to pay it.

No you aren't in trouble. You will need to pay back what you've been paid but that is easy enough. You've evidence they received your requests to stop the payments. They will request the money back at some point but that should be the end of it.
