How long is too long to fix my car?

Hi, a car went into the back of me in December. I claimed through my insurance - the other party admitted fault straight away. However, it has taken 3 months just to get my car into the garage. My car needs a new bumper, which they are saying is on order, but they have no idea when its likely to come in.
Although I know its not the garages fault they can't get the part, I was wondering if theres a reasonable time limit you can expect these things to take. At what point do they give up and say they can't get hold of the part?
The part has been on order since the beginning of March, and they have no idea when/if its going to turn up.

Is it a rare car? most of these parts should be available off the shelf especially something like a bumper.

The supply chain is totally goosed at the moment with Covid and Brexit.

It seems odd to have taken so long to get into the garage though.

I'm assuming the car is still drive able and noone has been paying for a courtesy car for 5 months?

Unfortunately all you can do is wait, but there's nothing stopping you approaching the other insurance company for a cash settlement to either fix it or not. Tell them you're planning on selling the car and don't want to take the financial hit due to the condition.

You could agree to a secondhand part.  In these times assuming vehicle still roadworthy I wouldn't put it into the garage until the part was in.
  • My car is still roadworthy. I was driving it until March, when it was booked in, I assumed at that point the bumper was there waiting to be fitted. Its a nissan qashqai +2, nothing too rare lol. The latest update is the 6th of may, but then I am assuming at that point they'll push the date back again. I have had a hire car since March paid for by insurer, but I am out of pocket as I chose (I know I don't have to) to get hire car protection insurance, as if anyone scratches/dents cqr while I have it, I would have to cover that cost. And as my car in the past, and other colleagues cars, have been dented where we patk, I felt I had no choice.
