I would go for nasturtiums or sweet peas this summer,  and also plant the more permanent choice so it can get established.

If the fence is not connected to your home, how about Russian Vine (aka Mile-a-minute). Its a thug, so best kept away from anything you don’t want destroying but it will love chicken wire & flowers too!

If you want a longer term solution, 50cm bare root hawthorn and blackthorn hedging plants are under a £1 each at the moment. You need about 4/5 per metre, but they are fast-growing and very wildlife-friendly.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.
  • Would suggest you avoid blackthorn as it suckers and will come up in adjacent beds (or next-door neighbours' gardens) and is very thorny....unless you only have grass nearby, in which case it could be stopped by mowing... pity, as ka7e says, it's a very good early flower for insects...

morning glory!!  there are some lovely ones - I've got both the really bright blue and a striped red type.

For the more solid look try Compassion Rose.  It's a climber that grows like wild - one plant can quickly top 7 feet high and 10 to 12 feet wide, gets covered in large blooms (pink fading to yellow) that will go from June to November (well down south it does). Great for picking and smell gorgeous.  Bonus is that it has murderous thorns so if you have security issues it is perfect.
