Moto g5 to moto g50

Options
I'm afraid I need an idiot's guide to moving from a moto g5 to a moto g50.   I have had the g5 for a long time and feel I need to move on.

I now have the g50 straight out of its box.   Unfortunately the booklet which came with it is not very helpful, and the usuer manual I have found on the web doesn't seem to be basic enough!   (I really do need it to be pretty baisic!)    I simply want to transfer everything I have on the g5 to the g50 - data, apps, contacts, settings, photos, music WhatsApp, etc.

I am charging the new phone as I write (it said 49% when I plugged it in a few minutes ago but now the screen is blank.   I have not yet switched it on.   So what do I need to do next please?    (My then 12-year old granddaughter who set things for me on the old phone several years ago is not available!!!).   Any help and guidance much appreciated.

Basic setup is very easy ... start the phone, enter your Wi-Fi details, login to your Google account and follow the remaining prompts.

The bigger issue is migrating across things like text messages and WhatsApp content.

Do both the G5and G50 support NFC (Near Field Communications)?

    https://help.motorola.com/hc/apps/migrate/13/en-us/es07251303.html might offer some help.

    As might https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CU8mKfaaT20

    Moving WhatsApp is easy:
Do a backup on the old phone.

Setup Whatsapp on the new phone once you've swapped the Sim over.
    Restore the backup.  Job done.

Text messages can be done via apps on the Play Store to back up and then restore.

Your photos if your old phone was set up correctly are all in your online Google account.
  • Thanks.   Two further questions -
At what point do I move over the SIM and the SD card from the old phone?
And I thought I had read somewhere that Moto Migrate doesn't work on Android 11 phones.   Is that right?

You don't need Moto Migrate.  These sort of apps don't do anything you can't do yourself.

You can move the Sim and the SD when you like, but if the SD has been set up with adopted storage on the old phone then the new phone won't want anything to do with it, and it'll insist on wiping it.  This is because of the way adopted storage works in Android, it makes it unique to the phone it was done on.

If however it has been set up as portable then you can just plonk it in and it'll carry on.

And just for clarity - adopted storage is where you use an SD card to make the phone think it has more "memory" (storage); basically the internal storage and SD card work as one entity. This is good for phones where the internal storage is only 8GB (and maybe also for 16GB), but it means (as said above) that the SD card is "linked" to that phone - try to use it in another phone and the phone will want to wipe and reformat the SD card.

  • As far as I know the SD card just contains photos, music etc.   Looking in "Storage" on the old phone it says "Internal shared storage 14.92GB used of 16 GB"  and then "Portable storage  SanDisk SD card 19.31 GB used of 32.00GB".
    Does that give the answer?

    I've recently moved from G7+ to G31
Fairly simple but I'm quite techy ;)
Make sure you back up Whatsapp on old phone (as mentioned above) before you transfer sim.
Then open Whatsapp on new phone and it should happen automatically

To back up call history and texts, I used SMS Backup and Restore
but you will need to find somewhere to put your backup - I chose Google Drive as it then appears on the new phone

I bet the new phone won't have your favourite ringtone ..... that may take a little more transferring .... :#

Yes - it's portable storage so you can simply remove from the G5 and plug into the G50.

How important is it to transfer old WhatsApp messages for most people? Just interested.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

It's down to how and why you use it I guess.

My last phone upgrade I didn't bother moving messages across.

My partner flat refused to upgrade unless a successful message migration could be demonstrated (same for SMS messages).

    Different strokes.....
