Black squares behind the rear view?

What are these things?

Looking at getting a tinted sun strip put in soon (no, not them 10" wide ones) and wondering what this is and whether it'd be an issue?
Last car didn't have it.

It is sometimes called the third visor2

Those marking are for the position of where to put pay per mile transmitter, like in France (for example). I think the card has to go in the hatched area but I could have got that back to front.1

unforeseen said:It is sometimes called the third visorWell it wants a re-design then as that's why I'm getting someone to put in a strip as we're coming that time of year again where I'll be getting blinded between the 2 sun visors. And for anyone who's thinking of chirping in with it doesn't work doom-&-gloom - don't bother. Had it done on the last car & in my opinion it did work.

Is that not in front of the rear view?

It's a sun blind.
It's meant to diffuse any bright sunlight from behind the mirror.1 -
Sunblind. My Audi has a little plastic fold down blind there that I hadn't noticed until I'd owned the car for 10 years!Signature on holiday for two weeks1

As said already, it is just a sun blind. The issue would be if your car has atomic wipers (as in like radio active decay, they operate completely at random) the rain sensor is usually behind the mirror, covering it from the outside with a sun strip would make it even less likely to work. You can see the rain sensor if there is one from the outside, the giveaway would be an annoying AUTO setting on the wiper switch, which usually replaces the more useful variable delay.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Its just a sun visor but its worth considering what automated features you have that may be hampered by putting a strip on.
Also remember that it is also a modification that technically will have to be declared on your insurance. Many insurers won't care but some will count it in the same way as tinted windows that does often attract a premium loading. Wouldn't want your claim declined for falsely declaring you'd made no changes to your vehicle.2 -

The Black dots are called The Frit Band - they appear round the outside edge of the windscreen and serve two purposes. When a windscreen is manufactured the screen is flat and heated to give it its curve and the frit band helps to stop distortion, second it acts in bonding the screen to the metal. Where it extends a bit where your rear view mirror hangs out, helps cut down on the sunlight trying to burn out your retinas when you check behind you.Fine fitting a sunscreen but apart from the Frit band some screens do have various black patches which house sensors so covering those could cause problems - you need to check before covering them.3
