I'm looking for lightweight and cheap luggage.

We're going to be flying with Ryanair soon, and they have pretty strict weight and size regulations for luggage (as do other budget airlines). You can only have 15KG per person of checked baggage, but they allow you to take up to 10KG cabin baggage (size 55cm x 40cm x 20cm).
Does anyone have any recommendations for lightweight (and cheap) luggage that's also pretty decent (ie. not going to fall apart in 5 minutes)?
Don't want much, do I.....?!

I have stopped using suitcases as they always get damaged , I now just use a large holdall with built in wheels and 2 strong straps around it + a rucksack thats the same size as Ryanairs cabin baggage limits.
Cheaper and lighter than cases + the rucksack carries all my beach and day gear while touring around.

I'd endorse Shammy
Or try and get it all in handluggage, saving the rip off ryanair charges for check in and get your earlier boarding so more chance of sitting together...challenge the number of shoes (dont want to open a new thread, but dont some take too many?)
they rarely weight hand luggage, but be prepared to be challenged - my trick is to travel wearing the heavy items, and just carry on the essentials
next trick is to load jacket pockets with heavy items, so again wont be weighed, and you can add back to the carry on bag after security
You cant take liquids over 100ml through...BUT you can buy at Boots airside in most airports, and get a meal deal to eat on the plane - saving £s and eating better sarnies!
i fly ryanair regularly - these tricks do work, but if travelling as a family, the needs are different, and Ryanair's extra charges soon narrow the gap vs "real airlines" so check BA etc too0 -
I got an antler suitcase from TKMaxx for £16... it seems to be very well made, is light and crucially fits into the guide rails for luggage.0

Makro usually have a good selection - I got a set of cases from there about 3 weeks ago.
Be warned though - you get what you pay for! I took some cheaper cases back and swapped for next price up as cheaper quality just didn't look sturdy enough for our long haul flight."A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove that you don't need it." :wall:

I bought this 3 years ago and its been to India 5 times and still like new. Its half price at the moment http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/2852775/Trail/searchtext%3ERUGGED+GEAR.htm
I bought it full price, and got it because my suitcase weighed 14lbs empty ! it was only a nylon suitcase with wheels. The Rugged Gear holdall weighed 3-4lbs . I put all my fragile stuff in a plastic tub and put in the middle of the holdall and nothing has broken.0 -

Can you not make a sarnie?, I do, never buy anything at airports or on aircraft.0 -

Many thanks for all your helpful suggestions and advice. I like the idea of a wheeled hold-all and the argos one suggested by imho looks really good. I will also look in the other places- I didn't even know we had a Makro in Chester until I looked on their website- I MUST check that out! The Ryanair 'tips and tricks' are good too, and I love the sandwiches Boots do- they're always much tastier than the ones I make myself.0

Went to my local Jumble sale today , and they had a Samsonite wheeled holdall £5 ! they reduced it to £3 ! I nearly bought it but there is nothing wrong with the Rugged gear holdall i have.
Sometimes it pays to live in a very posh area, just because of the jumble sales that are on here0 -
Antler are great, i've got a full suitcase set from them. Not cheap, but it's good stuff. You can get a decent reduced price if you buy from their factory shop in Bury, Lancs0
