How to remove obsolete gmail addresses?

As soon as I start typing a "to" address in gmail, a list of suggestions comes up.  Most of these are not what are listed in my "contacts" but seem to be addresses with which i exchanged emails several years ago!  It would be nice if I can somehow delete these obsolete addresses, but I can't see a way of doing so.   Can it be done, and if so, how?

Thanks, but they're not listed as stored addresses under "addresses and more" in Chrome settings.

Thanks.  At least that's enabled me to stop Google automatically adding further email addresses to my "contacts" list.

However, unless I've missed something in the article to which you kindly linked, there's no mention of how to delete auto-suggestions of addresses which are not in my "contacts" list and it's those that are the PITA.  Some of them must be at least three years old!  I can't even work out where they're stored, never mind how to delete them ...

Can you click on the auto-suggested email address, and then get an option to delete?

When you say they aren't in your contacts list - do you mean in Google Contacts? Have you accessed google contacts online and looked in the Other Contacts folder - just above the Bin folder?

    Hurrah!!!!!!   :)  :)  :)  :)  :)

At last!  Thank you so much for that.  There were dozens of them which are now deleted, and I've changed the settings so that it doesn't automatically save new ones, so that's a major vexation gone.

Good to hear that solved it.
