Medical Licence And Insurance

I currently hold a medical licence and have done for a while now with no problems at all driving.

My question is, as my licence needs to be reviewed every year by the DVLA, if they take a long time doing this and my licence expires, I know I am allowed to drive under section 88 of the road traffic act providing I haven't been told otherwise ( for upto a year )

If my licence does expire and the DVLA haven't finished reviewing my case, will/can this affect my insurance ?
My licence expires just before my insurance policy does, so perhaps if I renew the policy before it expires - this could avoid any problems

Thanks

As far as insurance goes, you should check the exact wording on your certificate.

Most insurers use a form of words along the lines of "provided the driver holds or has held and is not disqualified from holding a valid licence", which would mean that you are still covered if you are temporarily without a licence and driving under the s88 exemption.

However a few, mainly at the cheaper end of the market (Admiral spring to mind) do just say "provided the driver holds a valid licence", which could cause you "issues" if you don't hold one at that moment in time.

Cover is provided only if the person driving:
    Holds a valid licence

Isn't disqualified from holding or obtaining a valid licence.

    Is what it says

You may need to inform your insurance company about your medical condition depending on policy wording.
