Hi there,

We have just had our direct debit increase by 300%, despite the fact that the energy price cap rise is 54%. We don't know what to do - the company (Outfox the Market) is stalling and refusing to reduce the increase, yet it seems that now is an impossible time to switch.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

A common misconception is that the price cap sets a limit of just 54% increase on what everyone pays. Sadly that is not the case.

Can you let us know what energy you are using for the past year in kWh and then the tariff you are on and the prices they are charging per kWh and the standing charge price per day for each fuel you have.

Gas Cap is up about 75% and Electricity Cap about 33%.  That is where this "notional" 54% comes from.
As above far more info required.

Have you been on a fixed tariff that recently ended or will end very soon? The "54% increase" is an increase from the old capped rate to the new, for an exactly defines average user. Each difference to this average can increase or decrease the percentage,

As @Mstty wrote we need more information like

    - are you in credit or debit
    - old rates for gas and electricity
    - new rates
    - gas and electricity consumption for the last 12 months

I'm afraid the 300% increase might be entirely appropriate but it's impossible to know without more information.
