Gatwick Airport - rip off parking

5.6K Posts

I noticed last week and again this week that Gatwick Airport are suggesting it necessary to pre-book all parking as they are busy. I know it is Easter but they still have the same number of short term car parks open now as they did before the pandemic - 3 at South and 2 at North.
Collecting my daughter from a flight tomorrow and expect to be in the terminal for 60-90 minutes maximum. Using the short term parking prices at Gatwick that would set me back £13, which in itself I think is expensive.
Following instructions to pre-reserve and book a space, Gatwick Airport Ltd wish to charge £40 for a 1 hours stay. I'll pre-book if you wish but I expect to pay the same advertised price on your website, not to be ripped-off. Shame on you Gatwick Airport Ltd/Global Infrastructure Partners / Vinci Group. Rant over.

In the end we decided to take a chance, ignore the official airport advice and just turn up and try to park in one of the North terminal’s two short stay car parks. Had no problem finding a space.
The timing was perfect as we went into arrivals, met our daughter, got back to the car with her and multiple suitcases, all within 30 minutes. Ended up paying ‘only’ £5 for the < 30 minute stay. Quite a difference from the £40 for the hour that the airport website suggested we opt for.
I can only assume that Gatwick Airport Ltd is hoping to stripe and catch out as many people as they can. Poor show.
