The OP's friend isn't looking to exchange his licence: the question was simply whether his UK licence was still valid in addition to the NZ one.Emmia said:
But whether he needs to surrender fundamentally depends on how long he's visiting for, as he can drive for up to 12 months on his NZ licence. No need to exchange or apply for a UK licence.Car_54 said:
If a New Zealander wants to obtain a UK licence, he must surrender his NZ licence in exchange. This is a reciprocal arrangement, so the same applies when a Brit obtains an NZ licence, i.e. he loses his UK licence.Grey_Critic said:I don;t undetrstand the *Exchanged Licence* Surely when you pass your driving test in the UK then (apart from the requirement to renew every 10 years) you still have a UK driving licence. The fact you may live in another country does not matter. The UK still recognises your licence - there are no conditions that say you have to use it or lose iot.
If he's here for a for a few weeks on holiday, then he should just use his NZ licence.0 -
It's not, as it's been exchanged - he should have given up the photocard / paper then, the fact he didn't doesn't make the uk licence he has valid.Car_54 said:

He can use his NZ licence without issue for 12 months in the UK.0 -
There's certainly no issue so far as his entitlement to drive is concerned. There may however be "issues" with car hire and/or insurance.Emmia said:

***There may however be "issues" with car hire and/or insurance. ***Highley unlikely - most car hire firms are used to foreign licences = My youngest came back from LA on business and only had his US licence with him.The only problem was the hire company was only allowed to give him an automatic as most people from the USA do not know how to drive a stick change.I had regular customers from abroad - they even gave me their parking tickets to pay and bill them.0

Thanks folks - safest to report the NZ licence to insurer / car hire I think.
He's only here for 3 weeks, now that the borders have opened up, going back to NZ after that - no ambition to get a UK licence back at this point.0
