    Hi.

Not really about value for points. More about the ratio. For most short haul europe flights you require 12,000 miles. To go to the states you require 50,000 miles. The short hauls are normally around an hour long while for example flying to the states is over six hours.

Have a look at BA's redemption calculator: http://www.britishairways.com/travel/ecredeemcalculator/public/en_gb

Re mileage expiry. Your miles remain valid as long as your BA account remains active at least once every 36 months.

For tons of information about BA Exec club have a look at https://www.flyertalk.com. There is a dedicated board about BA and there is an excellent sticky which explains the exec club in detail: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=368179

Hi pin, thanks again for your post.
The destinations I am looking at require 25,000 points for a return economy flights plus taxes and other charges. The flights I am looking at are no more than 5hours long each way. Do you think that balances out OK?

Yep, basically it now says 18,000 miles plus £45 cash for the same destination. That can't be bad I suppose.

is the BA Amex card and the BA miles scheme only of use to members of the BA executive club? Do you have to be a member of the Exec club to get the best benefits?

I think if you get the card you automatically become a member of BA Exec Club.
