Unexpected payment to credit card

I've received a payment to my credit card and I don't know who from. I've spoken to the card company but they're no help and say if someone has paid me by mistake they will claim it back. Now I can just leave it sat on the account but how long for? I Don't want to accidentally spend any of it. Will it effect my credit score? What if its a competition win I forgot I'd entered or a gift? Strange question to put out to my family and friends especially if it turns out it was one of them but didn't want anyone to know lol must admit I want it to be legitimately for me but don't know how to confirm. Any help would be appreciated

It is likely to be an error.  No friends, family or prize award will pay into your CC account.  If it is not rectified in a few days speak with your CC provider again.  They will not want the account left in credit.

Your friends and family wouldn't have your credit card details - and likely no competition you'd entered would either, so any overpayment will likely be an error. If it has taken you into positive credit - you might need to check with your provider if they are happy to let the payment sit there as cards shouldn't be in credit for too long - use your card as you normally would - but any spend you make - ensure you keep the relevant overpayment of value set aside so that when it gets recalled, you've got the funds to cover it. Don't spend your free money until you know the source.

    Is it £150?

If you've paid your council tax by credit card,  maybe they've paid the cost of living rebate thing into it?

It's not a refund, is it, for something you've bought and then returned?  Most retailers will always refund back to the original purchase method - so if you bought something on the card, any refund would go back to that same card.

Might help if you provided a description from the statement.

Does it match your normal description of your payment?
