Thanks Silvercar. I've written as you suggested and hope it's not another 4 months before I receive a reply ....

OH's employer (another airline to those mentioned here) had come to the conclusion that crew sickness is compensationable for cancellation, but not necessarily for delay.

The key here is that crew can be brought in from EU airports to cover the flight which may end up being more than 3 hours late.

For a flight leaving KLM's home base there's far less of an excuse than with an airline that has multiple bases across Europe, so this would likely fail the test on the basis that more could theoretically have been done to stop the cancellation.

This hasn't been tested in court, however as OH stated to passengers one morning, the aircraft wasn't going anywhere without a First Officer sat next to her (who at the time was on their way in from Poland as pax).

So, as Silvercar suggested, I wrote on 20th May asking for an explanation of "cabin reasons" and also for an explanation of how this was exceptional. I've had no reply.
I guess now I go to MCOL or CEDR. Which is best for my situation? And although my wife and I were on the same booking will we need to make two claims?
    Thanks in anticipation.

I took the case to CDRL, and after an adjudication in my favour and a long delay, yesterday I had notification from KLM that they will be paying me £440 on 13th November, a year and 9 months after my cancelled flight. 👍
