Morning everyone
I enjoyed my day to myself and got all my jobs done - probably did a bit much though as I was whacked in the afternoon.
This morning I'm going into town to post a couple of parcels and get my hair cut. I'll put some dye on it tonight as it's looking rather silvery.
Also need to get some money out the bank to pay for the cats holiday. They stay at a lovely cattery just a few miles away - they will get picked up on Thursday morning and delivered back next week. Then I have little one for an hour or so while DD goes to a doctors appointment - then they are off to a caravan with a hot tub for a few days. Just 45 minutes drive away and with a couple of nice places to visit nearby.
Gers - your mams life was so interesting. As Snoozer and Camelot said you'd think we would have learnt from the past - well that those in power would.
Did you say once her old papers are going to a museum?
Camelot - take things easy, don't try to do too much at once.
Well I'm going to do a couple of jobs before I go out.
Hope everyone has a good day. Take care x

Good morning all.
Raining heavily now, not forecast!! OH and I had a good spell out in the garden yesterday, I really struggle, but managed to pot up some rogue pansies and put a French Lavender and some herbs into pots on the patio, the lawn is starting to recover after being pounded down into a mud puddle by the builders, but paving looks great and we now have another area where we can sit out when the wind direction is "wrong" for sitting on the main patio. Hopefully off today to Bee and Queue to buy a small table to leave in situ, need to do a chair inspection first and buy 2 more if they are past it.
TA I hope that it is "only a cold" and that you feel better soon.
Camelot fingers crossed that the shopping is not too tiring.
Ruby that boss of yours is unbelievable.
Gers how wonderful for you to now have that translation from your DM's papers.
Scarlett hope the caravan behaves itself, we have cancelled out month away in Yorkshire/Durham/Lake District as we just cannot go away with DDawg again.
Izzy sound idea to leave OH with the young ones.
Jackie enjoy "your day off".
Sunfl0w3r boo to only 3 hours sleep.
snoozer well done with removing the CS bags etc, lots to do here, may get stuck in if rain stays.
Rosy coffee/ice cream in the park sounds just the ting.
Better shift, need 2nd cup of tea, take care all.The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. (Abraham Lincoln)14 -

Hello all, it's raining today, now that wasn't forecast, it was supposed to be dry this morning and a few showers this afternoon 🤔 It feels colder than yesterday too although the thermometer says it isn't, must be just me then.
Nothing much is going on here today, just a bit of tidying and putting away and sorting out Teddy rabbit, think he was partying last night as there's sawdust and hay all over the floor 😯 I'll let him have a bit of exercise in the hall later when he starts running/jumping around again. The small freezer needs sorting and another list written as I rummaged in it last night looking for a cottage pie for our tea tonight. It's only 4 drawers but they are rammed and of course it was in the last one I checked. I'll bring in the bins when they are emptied too, our bin men turn up anytime on the allotted day, sometimes the next day if they are short of men or lorries.
Right another cuppa then I'll move myself.
Take care all, hugs to the poorly ones, those in need and the MIA's

ROSY it must have been the thing back then to keep everything in a small suitcase as I have one just the same, from my mum's side of the family. All sorts of unsolved mysteries turned up in it but also lots of information which is what set me off on my family ancestry quest. The oldest document in there is the marriage certificate of my Gt Gt Grandparents in 1878. Bless her, the bride couldn't read or write as her signature was X her mark. She had come up here with her family looking for work in the many mills which were around here then - 13 of them walked all the way from Norfolk with their belongings on a hand cart. I have lots of old postcards and photos too. My grandad was an ambulance driver/motorbike despatch rider in WW1, stationed in France, and I have some lovely photos of him in uniform, either on his own or with his unit. I still have the hankies he brought back for my grandma - pure silk edged in French lace. Too pretty to blow your nose on!
GERS your translations of your DM's stuff sounds fascinating. I agree with everyone else - why haven't lessons be learned from these wars.
Right I am leaving memory lane behind now and getting organised shortly for my Optician's appt. I have done another LFT and it's still negative, so "just a cold" and I will not be infecting the whole shop. I thought it felt milder first thing but it's back to feeling cold again, plus it's now started raining, so the winter woollies are still out. SNOOZER my last specs were over £300 so your £370 for 2 pairs doesn't sound expensive in comparison. (mine are varifocals)

Not been my morning. Dragged myself in the shower and got dressed ready to go shopping and the car wouldn't start. Grabbed my wally trolley and walked to Aldi where I got most of what I was after.
Walked home via the garage but it was closed then remembered I had breakdown cover with the car insurance. Phoned and luckily someone was here within 30 mins, lovely young chap - as it hadn't moved for a week apart from 5m across the drive yesterday it flooded so wouldn't start. I've now been for a drive round to get it warmed up so fingers crossed it's ok now.
Just had my breakfast and have sliced the top of my thumb with the bread knife.
I may go back to bed!11 -
Thanks for all the lovely comments about my DM's documents, she was blessed with a journalistic mind and recorded almost her whole life since 1941. In 2018, just before she became ill, she wrote some memoirs using the diaries and letters which I now have. The long account ended in 1951 when my brother was born as she became too tired to do any more. A lot of her letters were used for the memoirs so many won't need translated, but there's some still to be done as well as other stuff like this 'last days of the war' document. I have now found a name for the author (not any cousin) but have no idea who he was, more work needed! Reading everything really brings one up sharp to the horrors of what that generation on both sides of the conflict lived through and what is happening now in the Ukraine. I've now sent more documents for translation.Snoozer - have a lovely time when you're away.Bella - won't be long now!TA - my thoughts are with you BF, she's being really brave and practical. Your family memories are fascinating too. I think that my generation have had it easy because of what our parents lived through. My day ran away with me. An early email from a far-removed family member in Brisbane sent me on a hunt through my old flash drives for a photograph of my beloved Dad when he was in Tripoli and Aqaba in the 50s. Then a neighbour asked me to create a form for her and in the middle of doing that I realised that I had to collect a piece of art I'd left for framing. Two more things demanded my attention after that so it's only now that I'm sat down for lunch.ETA - the papers are going to the University of Glasgow for their use, in fact I'm handing them over tomorrow morning. They're getting all the originals plus I've saved all my scannings for them too. I'm thrilled that the papers will prove useful for future research.13

Dear me Camelot- hope your day improves after these calamities!TA - I just can't imagine walking to Yorkshire from Norfolk
Our suitcases are certainly items to treasure, and mine has also helped me with my family history.Well change of plan as DGS had a stuffy nose and tummy ache so didn't come here after all
I decided to defrost the freezers instead and now having a well deserved rest
I confess to chucking some turkey fillets with freezer burn. All written down in my notebook so we'll see how long I can keep up with the inventory! I've taken out some coq-au-vin for tea.I'm going to stick the kettle on ,bye for now x:heartsmil 'A woman is like a teabag: You never know her strength until you drop her in hot water'. TA some similarities here. My antecedents were farm workers in Northamptonshire who travelled for work in the cotton Mills. I don't know if they walked though.
Also my grandad enrolled as a medical orderly in WW1 because he didn't want to kill anyone. He was at a field hospital which was about to be taken by the Germans so the orderlies drew lots to see who would stay with the patients who couldn't be moved. He ended up as a POW for 18 months. He always had kind words for the German people though, saying they used to throw food over the wire to the prisoners. I wish I knew more but he died when I was 6 and the few facts I have were gleaned from an aunt.13 -
Afternoon all. What changeable weather we’ve had today. This morning started sunny, then it clouded over followed by constant drizzle until about an hour ago when the sun came out again. It’s feeling very mild and just a gentle breeze.
I’m glad to hear your work day yesterday wasn’t as bad as you were expecting, Ruby. Let’s hope it stays that way.
Look after that cold of yours TA, don’t want it ruining plans. Please send my best wishes to your BFF for a successful and speedy recovery.
Get well soon bella.
Oh dear, camelot - don’t you just hate those days when nothing seems to go right. Hope tomorrow’s a better day.
Those documents sound fascinating, Gers. How thrilling that they are going to Glasgow Uni.
All this talk of opticians has reminded me I still need to make an appointment for an eye test. It’s sat on my To Do list for too long. I may need new reading glasses and perhaps some for outside too as my long distance vision has definitely deteriorated. If that’s the case, I think I’ll stick to separate pairs.
Soup of the week was made this morning, celery & bacon, enough for 6 portions. There was quite a lot of soil on the stump end of the celery but that was soon washed off; other than that the picker did a good job as it wasn’t at all stringy and there were lots of leaves left on the top. I chop these up finely and freeze them in little pots of water (a bit like giant ice cubes) to use in stews, casseroles or soups for flavouring. I’ve also made a jug of custard from the left over half a tin of coconut milk to have with fruit for puddings. Mains tonight is spam, chunky chips and some braised red cabbage that was lurking in the freezer.
Our bin day (communal bins) is supposed to be Thursday but, as it’s a very short street, it tends to get done on a Wednesday along with the houses. No particular time of day, just at some stage of the day, so I make sure my rubbish goes out on a Tuesday. Since some SMs started accepting soft plastics for recycling, I’ve been surprised at how emptier my kitchen bin is.
My thoughts are with the poorlies and worried or just plain fed up. Take care. X
Be kind to others and to yourself too.10
