Local Energy Clubs, any opinions?

We have a local energy club near us, we are electric only and their standing charge is cheaper the BG by around half.

Units rates at the peak (i.e local energy source can't fulfil demand) are at the cap price.

There is a £3 a year fee. 

It says you require a smart meter but we don't have one at this time and think they just put you on capped prices until you are set up.

Overall prices would be significantly cheaper than the cap.

Are there are any downsides to this type of arrangement for your energy supply please?

I’ve signed up to my local energy group via Octopus who are installing my smart meter next week. Once installed I’ll be joining my local group which utilises a local solar farm. I’m free to leave any time so will see how it goes.
