I would say the day before support ends, but then again I am using W11 on a laptop that shipped with W7 , of course I never upgraded it to W8, as I thought it was an abomination

Windows 10 is still in mainstream support from Microsoft getting monthly updates including security until 2025. Provided you keep up to date. For example the Windows 10 version 20H2 support ends next month.

Due to the hardware requirements for Windows 11 Microsoft are continuing with 10 as well for the moment.

:o didn't update to W8? How much scorn did MSEers pour on you for being out of date?

W7 was still in support when W8 and W8.1 were out. (W7 support ended Jan 2020?) So the poster went straight from W7 to W10 (as did I on my previous laptop). :)

because i changed to 10 before 7 "died" and I had a fall back plan running w7/10/11 on linux as a virtual machine :o:o
now that may have caused scorn, but it's not like I have ever asked for help on an out of support system but hey enjoy B)

One was an actual photograph taken with my phone, the other was a screenshot of something on my phone.

If i double click the photograph, it opens.

    Hi
Back on topic, it's my turn to guess... :)
Possibly your Samsung Galaxy S10 camera creates jpg files that don't have an ICC_Profile.
Possibly your Samsung Galaxy S10 screenshot app creates jpg files that do have an ICC_Profile.

Having or not having an ICC profile won't make any difference to whether the Windows photo viewer can open the file.

    Regardless, it's a fine guess.

It is more than a fine guess, it is probably the answer to the problem. I've come across this before on Win 7 PC's at work and after a bit of Googling you will find several solutions suggested related to the ICC profile.

One solution is to open the jpg in Notepad++ and edit the ICC data. Another is to change the ICC settings in Windows colour management.
