Bill received 14 months after Energy Company stopped Trading

I have just received a bill from a company called "Credit Style Limited" saying the administrators of Avro Energy (Company that stopped trading) have asked them to bill me for electricity used in January 2021, based on an estimated initial reading and a Final meter reading on 28.1.21. The bill states, "Most people who received these bills have already paid; you are one of the few who have not." This was the first and only information about any outstanding debts. I paid my energy by direct debit with amount suggested by Avro Energy.
Is this legal, as it is over 12 months old?

Yes, it's legal; debts aren't time-barred until five (Scotland) or six (England & Wales) years have passed.
Do you think you owe the money?

  • Administrators of failed suppliers are not ‘governed’ by Ofgem regulations as the company no longer holds a Supply Licence: this was revoked on the day that the SoLR was appointed. For this reason, The Energy Ombudsman cannot deal with any complaints about a failed supplier. The Administrator has a legal obligation to all monies owed to the failed company.

Arguably, if the failed supplier was still regulated by Ofgem then what you are looking at is a Final Bill which had its own compensation scheme for late billing and not the BackBilling rules that you were hoping for. Sadly, in your case, a debt is still owed and could be claimed back through legal action.
